Area Auto Sales Dip Slightly to 4,036 in November

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – November auto sales in the Mahoning Valley were almost even with last year as 4,036 new and used vehicles were sold, down just 49.

According to the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers Association’s monthly registration report, new-car sales in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties totaled 2,234 in November – up 81 from the same month in 2019 – while used-car sales totaled 1,717, down 148.

Heading into the final month of the year, the results show that area dealers overall are about a month behind in sales, a result of the pandemic shutdowns in March and April. Year-to-date, there have 50,228 vehicles sold, down from 4,276 from the first 11 months of 2019.

“We continue to see customer demand for new vehicles shrinking the year to date sales gap,” said Louis A. Vitantonio Jr., president of the association, in a statement. “Used vehicles slowed slightly in November but are equal year over year. As inventories continue to improve, December should round out the year with single digit sales declines over 2019.”

Locally, Sweeney Chevrolet in Boardman led the new-car sales chart with 155 sold, up 11 from a year ago. Following are Boardman Subaru, Boardman, with 139, up 27; Greenwood Chevrolet, Austintown, with 135, up 30; Stadium GM, Salem, with 125, up 22; and Sweeney Buick GMC, Boardman, with 110, up five.

For used-car sales, Greenwood Chevy was No. 1 with 92 sold, up 10 from November 2019.

Across the dealership association’s 22-county footprint, five dealerships ranked in the top 10 for combined new- and used-car sales. Greenwood Chevy was fifth with 242, Sweeney Chevy was sixth with 242, Fairway Ford in Canfield was seventh with 228, Boardman Subaru was ninth with 210 and Taylor Kia was 10th with 206.
