Canfield Fair Auctions Help Second Harvest during Hunger Action Month

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – To kick off Hunger Action Month, livestock auctions at the Canfield Fair on Thursday and Friday will support Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley.

At 5:30 p.m. Thursday, goat milk fudge, market rabbits and market goats will go up for auction and sale, followed by market lambs and carcass lambs at 7 p.m.

On Friday, market broilers, turkeys and ducks will go up at 4 p.m., followed by market beef and market feeders at 7 p.m.

Winning bids for market beef, hogs, poultry broilers, turkeys, goats and lambs may be donated to Second Harvest. Purchases donated to the food bank will be processes by Winona Frozen Foods and Lehman Poultry. Processing feeds will be added to the purchase prices – 52 cents for market beef and hogs, $100 for lambs and goats, $6.50 for broilers and ducks and $17 for turkeys.

Those who are interested in donating or who have questions about the registration process can call Douglas Martig of the Mahoning County Livestock Committee at 330 720 3793.

New this year is online bidding through the Canfield Fair App, which will feature an “auction” icon when animals are listed for sale.

Hunger Action Month, now in its 14th year, is Second Harvest’s nationwide effort to raise money and donations for partner food banks and pantries.

Locally, donations can be made at MahoningValleySecondHarvest.org, with a $1 being equivalent to six meals. Organizations can also register to host food drives and fundraisers by calling 330 792 5522. And on Sept. 17, Second Harvest is encouraging people to wear orange and tag the agency on Facebook  – @SHFBMV – with the hashtag #HungerActionDay.

Last year, Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley distributed more than 15.6 million pounds of food, including 5.2 million pounds of produce.
