Flashback Minis | Carrie Green Mountain

Carrie Green Mountain was one of Warren’s first Black residents in the 1870s and the first Black person to own property in the city after buying her home at 135 Pine St. Born into slavery, Mountain was freed as a young girl after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Carrie Green Mountain would work as a caretaker for prominent Warren families like the Packards and the Hughes. Her son, Raymond Green, was a professional piano player and her second husband, Hiram Mountain, was Warren’s first Black police officer.

After her passing in 1948, the executors of her estate discovered about $30,000 hidden in the walls of her home. Most of that money she willed to the Salvation Army.
