HHS Awards $144K to Compass for Youth Shelter

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded a grant of $144,000 to Compass Family & Community Services, 535 Marmion Ave., for its Daybreak Youth Crisis Shelter, U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-13 Ohio, announced Monday.

The shelter, a 10-bed temporary refuge for homeless people younger than 18, is the only program in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties that provides a haven for such unaccompanied youth, says Joe Caruso, executive director of Compass.

“Without this funding, the community would not have services for youth who are homeless or unable to remain in their homes for many reasons,” Caruso said in a statement. “Daybreak provides safe, comfortable effective services for this most vulnerable population.”

Through the shelter at 2611 Homestead Ave., Compass has helped homeless youths since 1976. Compass has programs for residents of Trumbull, Mahoning, Columbiana and Jefferson counties from infancy through their senior years.
