Hilcorp Awarded Utica Permit in Lawrence County

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Hilcorp Energy Co. plans to drill a new horizontal well in Lawrence County, Pa., according to data from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

Hilcorp received a permit to drill and operate a new unconventional well targeting the Utica shale May 8 in North Beaver Township at the Kephart well pad, according to the DEP.

It is the first new permit issued to Hilcorp in the Utica this year, according to records. There were no new permits issued for neighboring Mercer County last week.

Meanwhile, 10 new horizontal well permits were awarded to energy companies drilling in eastern Ohio’s Utica during the week ended May 12, according to the most recent data from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

ODNR reported it issued the permits to three Oklahoma City-based companies. Ascent Resources Utica LLC secured two permits in Belmont County and two in Harrison County, Gulfport Energy Corp. was awarded three permits for wells in Belmont County, and Chesapeake Exploration LLC – a division of Chesapeake Energy Corp. – secured three permits for wells in Jefferson County.

As of May 12, ODNR has issued 2,830 permits for wells in the Utica, of which 2,346 are drilled and 1,890 are in production.

ODNR reported there were 21 oil and gas rigs operating in the Utica last week.
