Local Auto Sales Jump 144% in April as Rebound Continues

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Local auto sales in April were more than double their total from the same period a year ago, with 5,789 new and used vehicles sold in the three-county area.

According to data from the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers Association, that’s a 144.2% jump from a year ago, when just 2,371 vehicles were sold as dealerships were still limited by the coronavirus pandemic.

New-car sales in the three-county region totaled 3,052 in April, up from 1,187 sold in the same month last year. Used-car sales were at 2,602, up from 1,133 last year.

“Inventory, due to component and supplier shortages at dealerships across the country, remains extremely limited. If your dealer has the vehicle you want in stock, now is the time to lease or buy,” said Louis Vitantonio, president of the auto dealers’ association, in a statement. “As new inventory is scarce, used vehicles have become an alternative for many.”

Year-to-date, auto sales to buyers in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties are up 26.1%, with 20,125 sold through the first four months of the year.

Among local dealerships, Taylor Kia of Boardman was the top seller of new vehicles with 184 delivered to customers, followed closely by Fred Martin Ford, Austintown, with 182. In third was Greenwood Chevrolet, Austintown, with 170; Sweeney Chevrolet, Boardman, with 168; and Sweeney Buick GMC, Boardman, with 165.

Atop the used-car sales chart was Greenwood Chevy with 141. Also hitting triple-digit sales were Boardman Subaru with 117 and Taylor Kia with 113.

Across the association’s 22-county footprint, there were 9,866 new and used vehicles sold in April, up from 4,329 a year ago. Great Lakes Honda, Akron, was the No. 1 dealership with 538 sold.

Greenwood Chevy ranked fifth in the region with 326 new- and used-car sales, followed by Boardman Subaru in sixth with 319, Taylor Kia in seventh with 314. Fred Martin Ford was 10th with 278.
