ODNR Issues Nine Utica Permits

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Ohio Department of Natural Resources awarded nine new permits for horizontal wells in the Utica shale during the week ended Feb. 23, the agency reported.

Six of those permits were issued to Ascent Resources LLC for four wells in Guernsey County and two wells in Jefferson County, according to ODNR.

Eclipse Resource LP secured three new permits to drill horizontal wells in Monroe County, ODNR said.

The rig count during the week stood at 17, up from 14 the previous week.

As of Feb. 23, there were 3,006 permits issued in Ohio’s Utica for horizontal wells. Of that number, 2,535 are drilled and 2,141 are listed as producing, ODNR said.

There were no new wells permitted for the northern tier of the Utica, which includes Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

Neighboring Lawrence and Mercer counties in western Pennsylvania did not report new permit activity in the Utica for the week, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
