Valley Car Sales Dip in January, but Rebound Expected

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Local auto dealers started 2021 off pace from last year with 4,373 new and used cars sold in January, according to data from the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers Association, a decrease of 17.6%.

New-car sales fell 10.6% to 2,548, while there were 1,758 used cars sold to residents of Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties, a 25.3% drop from January 2020.

“January sales from 2021 were pitted against a very strong sales pace from 2020, before the economy slowed,” said President Louis A. Vitantonio in a statement. “Our current sales decline is in line with the rest of the country, seeing an up and down economic recovery.  We anticipate similar sales results in February even with low interest rates and favorable credit terms.”

In the three-county area, new-car sales were led by Sweeney Chevrolet, Boardman, with 167 sold, down 93 from January 2020. Following were Greenwood Chevrolet, Austintown, with 153, down 17; Toyota of Boardman with 136, up 65; Sweeney Buick GMC with 120, a decrease of 30; and Boardman Subaru with 117, up 12.

The local used-car sales chart was led by Greenwood with 86 in January, down 26 from a year ago.

Across the auto dealer association’s 22-county footprint, four area dealers ranked in the top 10 for combined new and used car sales: Greenwood at No. 5 with 252, Sweeney Chevy at No. 6 with 241, Fairway Ford, Canfield, at No. 8 with 235 and Toyota of Boardman at No. 9 with 233.
